Production area of Grana Padano.

The Consorzio per la Tutela del Formaggio Grana Padano (CTFGP) consists of 174 cheese producers.

It is based in San Martino della Battaglia, in Desenzano del Garda in the province of Brescia, right in the heart of the Grana Padano production area which spreads across the entire Po Valley and includes 32 provinces from Piedmont to Veneto and from Trento to Piacenza; the actual production is currently concentrated in 13 provinces.

After PDO recognition by the EU in 1996, CSQA Certificazioni Srl of Thiene (Vi) has been appointed by the Consortium and authorised by the Ministry of Agricultural and Forestry Policies to check that the conditions established by the production Rules and Regulations exist, on the basis of which the lozenge-shaped mark is fire-branded on the Grana Padano PDO cheeses.

Since 2002, by MIPAF decree, the Consortium has been entrusted with protecting, promoting, and valorising the product and informing consumers about PDO (Protected Denomination of Origin), including monitoring and safeguarding the PDO mark against abuse, unfair competition, improper use and any behaviour forbidden by the law during all stages of production, processing and marketing.

The Consortium also promotes scientific and market research to upgrade Grana Padano cheese production and marketing methods.

Nicola Cesare Baldrighi is President of the Consortium and Stefano Berni is Managing Director.
